Understanding STC Ratings

STC (Sound Transmission Class) measures how well a wall or floor assembly blocks airborne sound. Higher numbers mean better sound isolation. Ontario Building Code requires minimum STC 50 between dwelling units. Open cell spray foam in particular offers good sound absorption properties. We often use spray foam at rim joists, gaps, and penetrations to seal air paths that would otherwise transmit sound. For comprehensive soundproofing, we combine acoustic batts in wall cavities with spray foam air sealing for the best results.
