Wall framing is the structural backbone of any building project. Whether you're framing a new addition, building partition walls in a basement, or constructing a garden suite, accurate lumber estimates help you budget effectively and minimize waste on the job site.

Standard residential framing in Ontario uses 2×4 lumber at 16 inches on center (OC) for interior walls. Load-bearing walls and exterior walls typically require 2×6 lumber at 16" OC to accommodate thicker insulation and meet structural requirements. Non-load-bearing interior walls can sometimes use 24" OC spacing to reduce material costs.

Our calculator includes a 10% buffer for king studs, cripple studs, and headers around windows and doors. Lumber prices in the GTA fluctuate significantly with market conditions — 2×4×8 studs typically range from $4–$7 each, while 2×6×8 studs run $7–$11. Getting an accurate count before ordering helps you lock in pricing and avoid expensive small-quantity top-up orders.
