
Drywall mud — the joint compound that fills seams, covers fasteners, and creates the smooth wall surface you paint over — is one of the most misunderstood materials on a renovation site. Choosing the wrong type, applying it too thick, or skipping a drying stage costs contractors and homeowners time, money, and callbacks. This guide covers every type of drywall mud, when to use each one, and how to apply it correctly on Toronto and GTA projects.
Drywall mud is a water-based paste used to bond tape to drywall seams, fill fastener dimples, and build up a smooth surface through multiple coats. Most people use 'joint compound' and 'drywall mud' interchangeably — they mean the same thing. The product comes in two broad categories: setting-type compound, which hardens through a chemical reaction, and drying-type compound, which hardens by losing water to evaporation.
The distinction matters on site. Setting compounds give you a hard, shrink-resistant fill in 20 to 90 minutes regardless of humidity or temperature. Drying compounds depend on air circulation and ambient conditions — in a sealed Toronto basement in February, a drying-type coat can take 48 hours or more to fully cure. Using a drying compound before the previous coat is fully dry traps moisture and causes cracking or bubbling later.
Drywall mud is not the same as plaster. Traditional lime plaster requires a lath substrate and different finishing skills. Joint compound is specific to gypsum board systems, and it bonds chemically to drywall paper facing. Applying it over concrete, masonry, or unpainted metal without a primer coat will cause adhesion failure.
There are five main types of drywall mud used on Ontario residential and commercial projects. Each has a specific role in the finishing sequence, and confusing them leads to failures that often don't show up until after painting.
Hot mud (setting-type compound) is the professional's choice for embedding tape and filling gaps larger than 6 mm. Pre-mixed compounds work for finish coats. Using pre-mixed for deep fills leads to cracking as the product shrinks while drying.
Setting compound products — Durabond, Easy Sand, and similar brands — carry a number suffix: 20, 45, 90, 210. That number is the approximate working time in minutes before the compound begins to harden. Easy Sand 45 gives you roughly 45 minutes of working time. Once it starts setting, you cannot re-wet or rework it. Mix only what you can use in the working window, and clean tools immediately after use. Hardened setting compound on a blade or paddle requires mechanical removal.
Pre-mixed compounds arrive ready to use but require thinning for skim coats and spray application. They freeze in transport or storage — a pail left in an unheated van overnight in a Toronto winter is often unusable the next morning. Powder setting compounds are freeze-stable and have a shelf life of 12 months or more when sealed. For GTA contractors running year-round, keeping powder on hand for cold-weather work is practical. Pre-mixed pails are fine for interior projects with consistent temperatures above 10°C.
A standard three-coat finish is the minimum for Level 3 to Level 5 results. Each coat has a distinct function. Applying three coats of the same product in quick succession does not substitute for following the correct sequence with the right compounds.
The most common mistake on a first coat is using too large a knife. A 20 cm knife on a tape coat that needs to be 15 cm wide creates excess compound buildup at the edges. Work up in knife size across coats. Start at 15 cm for taping, move to 25 cm for the filler coat, and finish at 30 cm or wider for the skim coat. Feathering — gradually thinning compound at the outer edges until it blends invisibly into the board — is what prevents ridges visible under raking light. Ridges under a fresh coat of paint on a GTA renovation are almost always a feathering problem, not a product problem.
All-purpose compound fresh from the pail is often too thick for smooth application. Add small amounts of clean water and mix with a paddle on a drill. For tape coats, aim for a peanut butter consistency. For finish and skim coats, thin to a consistency closer to thick yogurt. Over-thinned compound sags on vertical surfaces and increases drying time significantly. Under-mixed compound drags and tears, leaving tool marks that require extra sanding.
Ontario's climate creates specific challenges for joint compound. Cold winters mean unheated buildings or garage conversions where temperatures drop below the 10°C minimum for pre-mixed compound to cure properly. High summer humidity in GTA basements extends drying time for all pre-mixed products.
The Ontario Building Code (OBC) specifies finish levels indirectly through paint and interior finish requirements, but the industry standard for residential work follows the Gypsum Association of Canada and ASTM C840. Level 4 finish is the minimum for walls receiving flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 is required under gloss or semi-gloss paint, and the OBC references this requirement for commercial and multi-family interiors where painted gypsum surfaces will receive higher-sheen coatings.
In bathrooms and high-humidity spaces, standard joint compound is not water-resistant. Use moisture-resistant drywall (green board or glass-mat board) and a mould-resistant compound in these areas. Several manufacturers produce mould-inhibiting compound formulas that meet the requirements of the OBC's Division B moisture control provisions for interior finishes in wet areas.
In GTA basements, run a dehumidifier and maintain temperatures above 15°C throughout the taping and drying process. Drywall mud that dries too slowly in cold, damp conditions develops surface cracking and weak tape bonds that fail within a year.
Fire-rated wall and ceiling assemblies in Ontario — required in party walls, garage separations, and stairwell enclosures — specify the type and application of joint compound as part of the rated assembly. UL and ULC listed assemblies often require specific compounds applied at defined thicknesses. Substituting a generic all-purpose compound for a compound specified in the assembly design can void the fire rating, which creates liability for the contractor and a compliance issue with the OBC. Always verify the compound requirement when working on a fire-rated drywall taping assembly.

Most drywall mud failures trace back to one of three causes: applying too much product per coat, not allowing adequate drying time, or using the wrong compound for the application. Knowing which problem you have determines the correct repair approach.
Skim coating — applying a thin layer of joint compound over an existing painted surface to repair texture, level unevenness, or prepare for a higher finish level — requires surface prep that most homeowners skip. Sand the existing paint lightly with 80-grit to give the compound mechanical grip, then prime with a PVA drywall primer or a bonding primer before skimming. Applying compound directly over a glossy painted surface results in adhesion failure, typically within days of drying. Topping compound or a purpose-made skim coat product works better than all-purpose for this application because it has less shrinkage and sands more cleanly.
Material costs for joint compound are consistent across the GTA, with minor variations between big-box retailers and trade supply yards. The real cost variable is labour — how many coats, how much sanding, and whether the finish level requires a skim coat.
A typical 1,000 sq ft Toronto main floor renovation requiring Level 4 finish on all walls and ceilings will use 3–4 pails of compound and 2–3 bags of setting compound, at a material cost of roughly $150–$200. Labour for the same scope from a professional drywall contractor runs $1,500–$2,500 depending on ceiling height, number of corners, and whether the work includes repairs to existing surfaces.

Compound is not where contractors cut costs on a tight budget — the savings come from reducing rework. Rushing the drying process or skipping a coat adds sanding, patching, and priming time that costs more than the compound saved. On new builds and multi-family projects in the GTA, professional tapers often use a banjo applicator and compound pump to bed tape faster, which lowers labour cost per unit without compromising quality.
Drywall taping is a skilled trade. A competent DIYer can achieve a Level 3 finish on a small repair or single room, but producing a Level 4 or Level 5 finish across a full floor of a Toronto semi-detached or multiplex unit requires consistent technique across hundreds of linear metres of joints, inside corners, outside corners, and ceiling transitions. Professionals have the tool investment, body mechanics, and pattern recognition from hundreds of projects that let them work faster and produce fewer defects. For anything beyond a single room or patch repair, the cost of professional drywall finishing is almost always recovered in time saved and results that hold up under critical lighting.
