Understanding Drywall Finish Levels

Drywall finish levels are industry standards (Level 0 through Level 5) that define how much joint compound and finishing work is applied. Higher levels mean smoother walls with less visible joints, but also more labor and material. The right finish level depends on your final wall treatment and lighting conditions - not every project needs Level 5.

Finish Levels Explained

• Level 0 – No finishing at all - used only for temporary construction or areas above ceilings
• Level 1 – Tape embedded in compound at joints - used in concealed areas like plenums and service corridors
• Level 2 – One coat over tape and fasteners - used in garages, warehouses, and areas receiving tile
• Level 3 – Two coats over tape and fasteners - suitable for textured finishes or heavy wallcovering
• Level 4 (Standard) – Three coats, sanded smooth - standard for residential paint and light wallcovering
• Level 5 (Premium) – Level 4 plus skim coat over entire surface - for critical lighting and high-gloss finishes

Level 4 Finish - Residential Standard

Level 4 is the standard finish for most custom homes and multiplexes. Three coats of compound are applied over joints, corners, and fasteners, then sanded smooth. The result is a paint-ready surface suitable for flat, eggshell, and satin paints. Level 4 is appropriate when walls receive normal lighting (not raking light) and flat or matte paint finishes.

Level 5 Finish - Premium Smooth

Level 5 adds a thin skim coat of compound over the entire wall surface - not just joints and fasteners. This eliminates the subtle texture difference between finished joints and bare drywall paper. Level 5 is required when walls will be under critical lighting (large windows, skylights, raking light), receive high-gloss paint, or when absolute smoothness is specified. Most high-end custom homes specify Level 5 in living areas.
